It’s definitely there, but I think it’s also clearly not the most important part of the story. To Kill a Kingdom does have a nice romance, but it’s not really overpowering. It’s always an interesting thing to explore and I really enjoyed this book’s take on it. Mermaids are sometimes associated with perilous events such as floods, storms, shipwrecks, and drownings. 1 Mermaids appear in the folklore of many cultures worldwide, including Europe, Asia, and Africa. Lira spends quite a bit of time thinking about whether it’s in a siren’s nature to be violent and kill humans, or if they were pushed to be that way by their queen. In folklore, a mermaid is an aquatic creature with the head and upper body of a female human and the tail of a fish. I really like books that experiment with nature vs nurture. But circumstances allow Lira to live among humans for a while and her opinion of them changes. They lured sailors to their deaths with enchanting songs and voices. Her mom is dark, twisted, and hates humans, and taught Lira to be the same. Sirens: In Greek mythology, sirens were dangerous creatures, often depicted as half-bird and half-woman.
